Perennial herb to 3 m high. Leaves alternating up the stems, to 40 cm long, 30–100 mm wide, hairless, with a long, sheathing base, tips drawn out to fine tips, ligule usually 10–15 mm long, entire or slightly notched, Flowers tubular, the tube about 12–14 mm long, with 3 yellow lobes each about 5-8 mm long (not very noticeable). The petal-like lip white, round, about 10 mm in diameter, shortly 2-lobed. Flower clusters 10–30 cm long. Seed case blue.
