Dry forest, woodland, grassland, roadsides, and along streams. Ranges, tablelands, ACT, the mountains to the west, and Kosciuszko National Park. Rarely elsewhere.
Only occurs in highly disturbed sites in Kosciuszko National Park, Southern Tablelands, and the ACT. Becoming an environmental weed in Kosciuszko National Park. Native only to the Northern Tablelands of NSW, where it is uncommon, and occurs in dry forest.
Introduced annual or perennial woolly herb to 1 m high. Stems winged. Basal leaves 1–6 cm long, 5–15 mm wide, both surfaces more or less woolly, tips with a long drawn out point. Stem leaves few, bract-like. Flower heads with white papery 'petals' 5–10 mm long, and yellow centres becoming darker with age, 10-20 mm in diameter. Flowering: summer.
