Dry forest and woodland.

Subsp. bakeri:  Coast and ranges north of Nowra.

Subsp. crassifolia:  Sydney area on sandstone.

Notes

Tree to 20 m tall. Bark rough on all but the smallest branches, fibrous corky, sometimes longitudinally fissured. Juvenile stems rounded in cross section. Leaves aromatic when rubbed, opposite each other. Juvenile leaves 5-10 cm long, 4-20 mm wide, hairless, green, margins entire, tips pointed. Adult leaves 5-13 cm long, 5-15 mm wide, glossy green, hairless, surfaces different colours, tips pointed, margins entire. Flower clusters 3-7- flowered. Flowers with 4-5 petals, creamy white to white, with a green stripe down the back, each about 3 mm long. Stamens much longer than the petals, creamy white. Mature buds 4-6 mm in diameter. Flowers summer. Buds and gumnuts longitudinally ribbed. Gumnuts 7-12 mm in diameter. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have valves that are not very noticeable.

Subsp. bakeri:  Leaves 5-13 cm long, 4-15 mm wide, thin, flexible.
