Disturbed bushland, woodland, gardens, roadsides, and near streams. Sporadic on the coast. Blue Mountans.
Introduced perennial herb to 0.7 m high. Flower stalk compressed, slightly winged. Basal leaves 10–60 cm long, 4–14 mm wide, usually thin and almost leathery, leaf bases usually red. Stem leaves alternating up the stems, smaller. Flowers bright blue with a green tube, about 12–20 mm long, tube about 8 mm long, and 6 lobes. Flowers in several loose branched clusters, each cluster with about 3–4 stalked flowers emerging successively from paired leaf-like bracts. Flowers opening for a few hours only.
