Forest, roadsides, and gullies. Widespread. No records from the western slopes.
Perennial herb, mostly to 0.90 m high. Stems reddish purplish, sparsely cobwebby. Leaves alternating up the stems, usually 5–10 cm long, 10–40 mm wide, often deeply dissected (especially the upper leaves), hairless to cobwebby, lower surface often purplish, margins coarsely toothed, stalks sometimes winged. Flower heads 2–4 mm in diameter, with 0 petals. Bracts surrounding the flower heads 15–20 mm long. Flowering: summer.
