Shrub or perennial herb to 1 m high, sometimes sprawling, stems sometimes reddish or purplish. Branchlets hairless. Leaves aromatic when rubbed, opposite each other, 0.7–2.6 cm long, 1.5–8 mm wide, hairless, lower surface often reddish, margins finely toothed or scalloped, tips pointed and often mucronate. Flowers pale to bright pink, sometimes white or green, with 4 petals each 2.5–6 mm long. Petals overlapping each other in bud, falling early. 4, 6, or 8 stamens. Flowers in 1–3-flowered clusters.
