Shrubland, swamps, and along rocky streams. Coast, ranges, and the eastern edge of the tablelands. Planted/garden escape in the ACT.
Shrub usually to 3 m tall. Bark generally hard. Leaf tips usually sharp. Leaves aromatic when rubbed, alternating up the stems, 3-7 cm long, 5-8 mm wide, venation obvious on both surfaces, glands sometimes conspicuous. Flower spikes 60-100 mm long, 40-70 mm in diameter, with 40-50 flowers, red, sometimes mauve or purplish. Individual flowers with 5 petals. Filaments of the stamens usually bright red, sometimes purplish red or lilac, 15–25 mm long. Flowers Spring to Summer.
