Woodland, along streams and wet gullies, especially in stony habitats. Widespread.
Shrub to 3 m tall or small tree. Leaves with a mucro. Bark hard, fissured on old plants. Young stems hairy, becoming hairless. New leaves pinkish. Leaves aromatic when rubbed, alternating up the stems, 1.2-5 cm long, 1-5 mm wide, midrib and marginal veins prominent, lateral veins obscure. Flower spikes 30-50 mm long, 20–40 mm in diameter, cream to yellow, sometimes pinkish. Individual flowers with 5 petals. Flowers Spring to Summer.
