Annual herb, spreading and mat-forming. Hairless. Leaves opposite each other, 0.25–0.75 cm long, 1.5–5 mm wide, margins sometimes toothed, tips sometimes with a small point. Male and female flowers on the same plant. Flowers usually paired with 1 of each sex at the base of a leaf. Bracts absent. Flowers minute, with 0 petals. Stamen with the filament shorter than the ripe seed case. Seed case 1.1–1.2 mm long, 1.2–1.4 mm wide, with a broad pale wing.
Mature seed cases are necessary for identification to species level.
