Perennial herb, often prostrate, rooting at the nodes. Hairless or almost hairless. Leaves alternating along the stems, 2–7 cm long, 5–15 mm wide, green, base with a membranous sheath, tips pointed. Flowers with 3 kidney shaped bright blue 'petals' about 6-10 mm long. Green spathes 10–20 mm long usually at or near the bases of the flowers. Usually 3 stamens producing pollen and 2-3 stamens not producing pollen. Flowering: spring–autumn.
