Dry forest and woodland. Coast, ranges, and the eastern part of the tablelands.

Notes

Tree to 35 m tall, rarely a mallee. Bark rough on all but the smallest branches, or on the trunk and branches. Rough bark tessellated, predominantly grey or brown.  Smooth bark peeling.  Juvenile stems rounded in cross section, rough  Juvenile leaves opposite each other for 4 to 10 pairs, then alternating up the stems (but may revert for a few nodes), 9-16.5 cm long, 30-52 mm wide, green, upper and lower surfaces different colours, bases peltate for the first 8 to 10 nodes.  Adult leaves alternating up the stems, 5.5-16 cm long, 15-50 mm wide, green, glossy or dull, upper and lower surfaces different colours.  Mature flower buds 8–12 mm long, caps shorter than the bases.  Flower clusters 7-flowered, forming compound clusters at the ends of the branchlets.  Flowers Summer-early Winter.  Gumnuts 9-18 mm in diameter. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have valves that are not very noticeable.
