Dry forest, woodland, grassland, roadsides, and damp sites. Widespread.
Perennial herb, branched at the base. 1 to several flower stalks to 0.50 m high, yellowish to reddish, hairy. Leaves basal and alternating up the stems, 3–20 cm long, 4–20 mm wide, pale to olive-green, sticky hairy, often with very sparse fine woolly hairs (particularly near the margins), tips broadly pointed. Flower heads golden-yellow, globular, 10–30 mm in diameter, with about 40–100 partial heads; partial heads prominently stalked, with 7–12 florets with 0 petals. Flower heads single. Flowering: spring to summer.
