Swampy areas and drainage lines, often partially submerged for at least some of the growing season. Mostly ranges and the eastern edge of the tablelands. Occasionally elsewhere.
Robust herb to 0.75 m high. 1–3 flower stalks, purplish, sparsely hairy. Old leaf bases retained on the stems. Leaves limp, basal and alternating up the stems, 15–40 cm long, 8–20 mm wide, tips blunt, bases often deep red, broadly stem-clasping, surfaces hairless or sparsely hairy; the hairs sometimes denser on the margins or midvein. Flower heads bright yellow, globular to hemispherical, 17–30 mm in diameter, with up to 300 partial heads; partial heads with 7–12 florets with 0 petals. Flowering: spring–summer.
