Where found

Aquatic in still or slow-flowing fresh water to 1.2 m deep, in small streams, swamps, and farm dams. Also in stagnant water. Coastal. Sydney area away from the coast as well. ACT.

Notes

Perennial herb, rhizomatous. Scape at the fruiting stage usually erect, about 0.47–1.03 m long, 2.5–12.6 mm in diameter, the fruiting spike 0.7–0.21 m long, 15–24 mm in diameter. Leaves basal, arising in tufts from the rhizome, strap-like, 6–450 cm long, about 40 mm wide, usually erect, more thickly spongy towards the base, with a sheath at the base. Flowers with 6 small 'petals' in two whorls, in a dense spike-like cluster. Seed cases touching, about 44–137 per spike, 7–9.6 mm long, very broadly oval to pear-shaped, the base star-shaped, contracted and stalk-like. Seeds never twisted, more or less triangular in cross section, not ridged or keeled.
