Forest, woodland, and grassy areas. Widespread.
Annual herb to 0.6m tall. Burrs with many hooked spines, which stick to clothing. Stems rough-hairy. Leaves basal and opposite each other, overall 1-30 cm long, deeply dissected, the lobes linear, surfaces and margins rough, with a sheath at the base. Flowers tiny, 0.5-2 mm in diameter, white, pink, purple or red, with 5 petals, in clusters of 1-6. Flowers Spring to Summer.
