Heath and dry forest. Coast, ranges, and the eastern edge of the tablelands.
Shrub to 2 m tall, occasionally sprawling. Stems usually hairless, occasionally covered with minute warts. Leaves alternating up the stems, 0.3-3 cm long, about 0.5 mm wide, surfaces smooth, hairless or rarely hairy, tips with a short, narrow, often curved, point. Flowers pea shaped, with 5 petals, 2 joined together to form the keel, standard petal yellow to orange with red markings, 8-10 mm long, keel yellow to reddish. Calyx tapering gradually towards the base. Flowers in one to several clusters of 1-8 at or near the tops of the stems. Flowers most of the year.
In all species of Dillwynia, the standard petal is much broader than long.
