Woodland and heath. Coast, ranges, and eastern edge of the tablelands north from Jervis Bay. Coast and ranges south from Tathra.
Shrub to 1.5 m tall. Stems hairy. Leaves alternating up the stems, 0.8-1.8 cm long, linear, not spirally twisted, tips pointed and often curved, surfaces strongly warty, hairless or with scattered, abruptly bent, hairs. Standard petal 3-5 mm long. Flowers pea shaped, with 5 petals, 2 joined together to form the keel, probably yellow to orange with red markings. Calyx tapering gradually towards the base. Flowers usually paired, the flowers extending down the stem.
Intermediates occur between Dillwynia sericea and Dillwynia rudis.
In all species of Dillwynia, the standard petal is much broader than long.
