In stationary or slowly flowing water especially where the substrate has been disturbed. Can form mats in still water. Mainly Sydney area and Canberra. Occasionally elsewhere.
Introduced submerged aquatic perennial herb. Stems to 5 m long, rooting at the lower nodes, buoyant, so most of the growth is near the surface. Leaves in whorls of 3–8, or the lower stem leaves opposite each other, 1-4 cm long, 2–5 mm wide, often curved down, translucent, margins with minute teeth. Male and female flowers on different plants. Female flowers not recorded from Australia. Male flowers white, with 3 petals 9–12 mm long, in clusters of 1–5. Flowering: spring to autumn.
