Where found

Moist places in grassland or in temporary shallow pools. At higher altitudes. Kosciuszko National Park, the mountains to the north, and the ACT. Rarely elsewhere.

Notes

Mat-forming perennial herb, to 0.15 m high where vegetation is dense. Lower branches rooting in mud. Stems sparsely to densely covered with wavy hairs. Leaves opposite each other on the lower stems, alternating along the stems near the flowers, 0.5–2.5 cm long, 2–9 mm wide, margins with sparse fine teeth, and often wavy. Flowers with 4 pale purplish pink petals 3.5–7 mm long, the inside of the floral tube hairless or with a few long hairs. Seed cases 0.8–2.5 cm long, very sparsely hairy, on stalks 0–3 mm long.

Definite identification of Epilobium species requires microscopic examination of the seeds.

All native plants on unleased land in the ACT are protected.
