Weed in disturbed sites and along streams. Widespread.
Introduced annual herb to about 1.5 m high. Stems often reddish, striate, hairy to sparsely hairy with long coarse spreading hairs. Leaves basal and alternating up the stems, with long spreading hairs mainly confined to the margins and lower midrib. Basal leaves 2–10 cm long, 3–15 mm wide, entire or sparsely toothed. Stem leaves entire or finely toothed, 2–8cm long, 2–7mm wide. Flower heads green tinged light brown, bell-shaped to hemispherical, 3–4 mm long, 2.5–4 mm in diameter. Outer florets with 'petals' about 1 mm long, white, (sometimes tinged purplish). Inner florets few. Flowers in an pyramidal branched cluster with numerous flower heads. Flowering: most of year.
