Wet forests on relatively fertile soils. Between Deua National Park and Bombala. Ranges and the eastern part of the tablelands.
Tree to 45 m tall. Bark rough only on the lower trunk, compacted, hard, shortly fibrous, blackish or grey. Upper trunk and branches smooth, shedding in long ribbons. Juvenile stems rounded or square in cross section, sometimes warty. Juvenile leaves stalkless and opposite each other for many pairs, usually stem-clasping, 3.5-8 cm long, 8-20 mm wide, dull, green. Adult leaves alternating up the stems, 8.5-20 cm long, 7-20 mm wide, dull, green. Flowers white, with 0 petals. Flower clusters 3-flowered. Mature flower buds 3–6 mm long, caps shorter than the base. Flowers Summer. Gumnuts 3-6 mm in diameter. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have strongly protruding valves.
