Forest. Coast, ranges, and tablelands.
Tree to 60 m tall. Bark rough on the lower trunk or the whole trunk, sometimes almost smooth. Rough bark extends onto the branches on younger trees. Rough bark thin, fibrous-flaky ('box'), in mottled grey and white patches, or grey-brown. Smooth bark shedding in short ribbons. Juvenile stem rounded in cross section. Juvenile leaves opposite each other for a few pairs, then alternating up the stems, 3-7 cm long, 18-33 mm wide, dull, green. Adult leaves alternating up the stems, 5.8-20 cm long, 7-27 mm wide, glossy or dull, green. Flowers white, with 0 petals. Individual flower clusters 7-flowered, usually at the bases of the leaves, but occasionally forming compound clusters at the ends of the branchlets. Mature flower buds 6–9 mm long, caps shorter than the base. Flowers most of the year. Gumnuts 4-8 mm in diameter. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have valves that are not very noticeable.
Hybrids have been recorded between Eucalyptus tricarpa and Eucalyptus bosistoana.
