Tree to 25 m tall, rarely a mallee. Bark rough over the whole trunk and often on the larger branches, fibrous-flaky (box-type) or tessellated, grey, grey- brown or mottled with grey and whitish patches. Smooth bark above, shedding in short ribbons. Juvenile stems rounded in cross section. Juvenile leaves opposite each other for a few pairs then alternating up the stems, 6–15 cm long, 40–55 mm wide, dull, blue-green or green. Adult leaves alternating up the stems, 6-15 cm long, 10-25 mm wide, glossy or dull, green. Flowers white, with 0 petals. Mature flower buds 4-9 mm long, caps shorter than or as long as the base. Flower clusters 3-11 flowered, forming large compound clusters at the ends of the stems or sometimes at the bases of the leaves. Flowers most of the year. Gumnuts 3-5 mm in diameter, sometimes faintly angled longitudinally. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have valves that are not very noticeable.
