Roadsides and gardens. Sydney area west to the Blue Mountains and north.
Occurs naturally in wet forest and rainforest margins, on the North Coast of NSW and in Qld.
Introduced tree to 60 m tall. Bark rough on all but the smallest branches, softly stringy or fibrous, brown-grey to red-brown. Juvenile stems square or rounded in cross section. Juvenile leaves opposite each other for 4 to 6 pairs then alternating up the stems, 4–11 cm long, 15–50 mm wide, dull to glossy, green, upper and lower surfaces different colours. Adult leaves alternating up the stems, 6–15 cm long, 15–35 mm wide, glossy, green, upper and lower surfaces different colours. Flowers white to lemon, with 0 petals. Mature flower buds 3-6 mm long, caps shorter than the base. Stamens arranged in four clusters, the outer stamens not producing pollen. Flower clusters 7-11 flowered, forming compound clusters at the ends of the branchlets, or often in single flower clusters or compound clusters at the bases of the leaves near the ends of the branchlets. Flowers winter to summer. Gumnuts 4-6 mm in diameter. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have slightly protruding valves that are not very noticeable.
