Forest and near streams. Coast, ranges, and the eastern edge of the tablelands.
Shrub or tree to 15 m high. Fruit fleshy, edible. Bark brown, somewhat corky and scaly with shallow longitudinal furrows. Branchlets brown or black, hairless. Leaves with a spicy smell when rubbed, alternating up the stems, 5–15.5 cm long, 20–58 mm wide, hairless, upper surface shiny. Sometimes with a coppery tinge (particularly on new growth). Flowers scented, white to cream, 20-25 mm in diameter, with many 'petals'. Flowers single or in clusters of 2-3. Flowering: chiefly summer. Fruit green turning brownish, 15-25 mm in diameter.
