Shrub to 2 m tall. Stems usually hairless, smaller stems often spine-tipped. 'Leaves' opposite each other, crowded, 0.15–0.5 cm or more long, to 1 mm wide, flat to slightly concave in cross section, hairless, margins with a few hairs, tips blunt. Flowers about 6 mm long, yellow; and purple, red, or brown, pea-shaped, with five petals, two almost joined together to form the keel. Flowers single or in pairs. Flowers Aug.–Nov.
