Introduced perennial herb, arising annually from underground 'bulbs'. Leaves fleshy, basal, 25–75 cm long, 3–7 mm wide, linear, thick, greyish green, parallel-veined, midvein and margins prominent, with a sheath at the base. Often bulbils in the leaf axils. 2-3 small sheathing leaves on the flower stalk. Flowers pink to pale or dark mauve, 'petals' with a central white stripe or mark surrounded by pinkish purple, funnel-shaped, 8–15 mm long, slightly widened at the mouth, with 6 lobes. Flowers in 1–7-flowered clusters. Flowers Oct.–Dec.
