Perennial herb to 1 m high. Basal leaves 3 or 4; 40–75 cm long, 1–1.5 mm wide, cylindrical or compressed. Flowers brown to black, 12–15 mm long, with 6 'petals' in 2 whorls, in one to several dense clusters of several to many flowers. Flowers Spring to Summer.
