Forest, woodland, and rocky slopes. Coast, ranges, and the eastern edge of the tablelands.
Perennial herb to 0.6 m high. Stems hairless. Leaves opposite each other, clustered, and alternating up the stems, 0.5–9 cm long, margins curved down. Flowers blue-mauve, sometimes white, with 4 small petals and one larger lower petal. Lower petal 7–20 mm long, usually about as wide as long, upper petals narrow, 2–3 mm long, lateral petals broad, 2–3 mm long. Flowers in elongated clusters usually 10–20 cm long, the flowers well-spaced, far longer than the leaves. Flowers Winter to Summer.
