Moist grassy areas, disturbed sites, and damp places, chiefly at higher altitudes. Western Slopes, Kosciuszko National Park, the mountains to the north, ACT, tablelands, and occasionally the ranges.
Introduced annual or sometimes biennial herb to 0.3 m high. Stems hairy. Leaves basal and alternating up the stems, hairy with spreading hairs, tips rounded, margins flat. Basal leaves 1–5 cm long, 2–10 mm wide, leaves becoming smaller and narrower towards the flowers. Flowers about 4 mm long, 1–2 mm in diameter, yellow to cream or white, usually becoming blue or violet with age, tubular, with 5 lobes. Stamens hidden inside the corolla tube. Calyx tube moderately to densely covered with hooked hairs. Flowers in clusters on one side of the coiled stalk when young, the stalk soon elongating. Flowering: spring–summer.
