Near streams; on wet ground or in shallow water. Widespread but not coastal.
Introduced annual, occasionally biennial, herb to 0.35 m high. Roots at the lower leafless nodes. Stems sparsely to moderately densely hairy with appressed hairs. Leaves basal and alternating up the stems, 2–8 cm long, 4–15 mm wide, moderately hairy with appressed hairs, tips rounded, margins flat. Basal leaves stalked, upper leaves stalkless and more or less stem-clasping. Flowers pale blue, about 2.5 mm long, 2–4 mm in diameter, tubular, with 5 lobes. Stamens hidden inside the corolla tube. Calyx hairy with appressed hairs. Flowers in clusters on one side of the coiled stalk when young, the stalk soon elongating. Flowering: spring–summer.
