Annual herb with a slender persistent taproot. Flower stalks to 0.3 m high, hairy. Leaves in a basal rosette, 2-10 cm long, 4-25 mm wide, with 3-5 longitudinal veins, hairy, margins toothed, the teeth sometimes obscure, tips blunt, stalks indistinct. Flowers tubular, the tube 1.5–2 mm long, with 4 lobes each 0.6–2.3 mm long, spreading or bent down. Sepals 1.8–2 mm long. Bracts 1.5–2 mm long, with a hairy keel. Flowers in cylindrical greenish or straw-coloured spikes 30–110 mm long. Flowering: mostly August–February
