Variety of habitats including forest, woodland, and open disturbed sites, often near water. Widespread.
Annual herb to 0.55 m tall. Stems woolly. Basal leaves withering early. Stem leaves alternating up the stems, 1–6.5 cm long, 1–8 mm wide, bases slightly stem clasping, surfaces hairy, margins sometimes curved to rolled down, often wavy. Flower heads about 3-4 mm long, 4-6 mm in diameter, urn-shaped to oval. Florets cream to yellow, with 0 petals, in clusters of about 5-20. Flowers most of year.
