Alpine and subalpine herbfields, grassland, and near streams and in bogs. Kosciuszko National Park. One record from the western edge of Wadbilliga National Park.
Perennial herb to 0.25 m high, usually forming dense clumps to 20 cm or more in diameter. Flowering stems hairy, unbranched. Leaves mostly basal, 1–4.5 cm long, oval to round, deeply dissected into three, the segments dissected, surfaces covered with spreading hairs. Flowers bright yellow, 15–32 mm in diameter, with 6–14 petals. Sepals spreading. Flowers single. Flowering: summer. Seeds 0–100, 2–2.5 mm long, lens-shaped, the sides smooth, marginal ridge not prominent, beak stout, straight or curved upwards, 1–1.8 mm long.
Hybridises with Ranunculus graniticola, Ranunculus millanii, Ranunculus muelleri, and with Ranunculus pimpinellifolius.
