Woodland, shrubland, and grassland, often on rocky sites or along streams. Western Slopes.
Many-stemmed perennial herb, usually to 0.5 m high, green to grey-green, hairy to almost hairless. Lower branches often with a woody base. Tiny vegetative shoots with round leaves frequently form on the woody base of the plant. Leaves opposite each other, 0.6–1.5 cm long, 2–7 mm wide, with large curved mineral concretions perpendicular to the midrib and often smaller curved mineral concretions between. Flowers red, pink, or with white stripes, with 2 longitudinal folds with darker striations, 6–10 mm long, tubular at the base, 2-lipped, with 5 lobes. Flower spikes dense, 1–5 cm long, sometimes interrupted at the base. Flowering: throughout the year.
