Forest, woodland, grassy areas, damp sites, and along streams. Widespread.
Perennial herb to 1 m tall. Stems hairless, grooved. Leaves mostly basal, 3-20 cm long, 7-60 mm wide, on long stalks, hairless, with a sheath at the base of the stalk, bases sometimes cordate or with somewhat pointed lobes, margins flat to tightly wavy. Stem leaves few, small, confined to the lowest third of the stem. Flowers 2-5 mm long, with 6 'petals', in whorls of 5-16 flowers mostly 1–5 cm apart. Flowers mainly Sep.–Jan. Seed cases with a hooked point and 3-5 hooked teeth on each side.
Hybridizes with Rumex tenax.
