Aquatic. Mainly Sydney area. Occasionally elsewhere.
Submerged perennial herb, stems to 3 m long, flattened, rhizomatous, flower clusters emergent. Leaves alternating along the stems, 1.5-17 cm long, 0.25–2 mm wide, linear, grass-like, hairless, margins entire, tips pointed, the top part of the stipular sheath at the base free and extended into a distinct membranous appendage. Flowers small, with 4 'petals', in globular clusters of 2-16 flowers arranged along the flowering stems, forming interrupted spikes. Flowers and fruits Nov.–May.
