Woodland, pastures, disturbed sites, and along streams. Coast and ranges mainly north of Thirlmere. Occasionally elsewhere.
Herb to 1 m tall. Branches erect, 4-angled in cross section, surface smooth, hairless to hairy. Leaves opposite each other. Lower and mid-stem leaves 2-7 cm long, 5-30 mm wide, rough, deeply cut almost to the midrib, margins toothed, tips pointed. Upper leaves smaller, almost entire or sparsely toothed. Flowers blue, mauve or pink, tubular, the tube 3–3.5 mm long, with 5 spreading lobes. Calyx 5-toothed. Flowers in clusters at the tops of the stem, flowers soon well-spaced, rarely clustered in a very short spike at the top. Flowers mainly October–January.
