Woodland, disturbed sites, roadsides, and along streams. Mostly coast and ranges north from near Picton. Occasionally elsewhere.
Introduced annual herb to 2.5 m high. Stems conspicuously 4-angled in cross section, surface mostly hairless, sometimes rough and hairy near the top. Leaves opposite each other, 4–5 cm long, about 1 mm wide, margins sharply toothed or incised, at least above the middle; tips more or less pointed. Flowers bright blue or violet to lilac or purple, tubular, the tube 2.5–3 mm long, with 5 lobes. Calyx 5-toothed. Flowers in branched clusters ending in a mostly short spike. Flowers throughout the year.
