Where found

Woodland and grassland. Widespread.

Notes

Perennial herb with a woody rootstock, to 0.3 m high. Stems glandular hairy, sometimes also with coarse non-glandular scattered hairs. Leaves alternating up the stems, 0.8–5.5 cm long, 1-9 mm wide, more or less folded in half lengthwise, margins entire or 3-lobed, surfaces glandular hairy and with scattered coarse hairs mainly on the margins and midribs, rarely hairless. Flower heads with many mauve to bluish purple 'petals'1.5–2.5 mm long, and yellow centres. Flower heads behind the ‘petals’ 6-15 mm in diameter. Flower heads single at the tops of the stems. Flowering: spring–autumn.

Definite identification of most species of Vittadinia depends on microscopic examination of the seeds.
