Where found

Dry forest, woodland, and stream banks. Widespread.

Notes

Shrub to 2 m high. Stems rough hairy, later becoming hairless. Leaves slightly aromatic when rubbed, in whorls of 3 or rarely 4, 0.4–2.7 cm long, 0.5–2 mm wide, hairy when young, and sometimes rough, margins entire and curved to rolled down, the lower surface often almost concealed. Flowers lilac, mauve or purple, rarely white, usually with orange to brown dots, 6–13 mm long, tubular, 2-lipped, with 5 lobes notched at the tips. Calyx green, hairy, tubular, with 5 pointed lobes. Flowers single at the bases of the leaves, in elongated leafy clusters. Flowering: throughout the year.
