Stem

An erect to scandent fleshy herb up to 30 cm tall with fleshy tuberous roots.

Leaves

Leaf blades variable in size, 25-120 x 8-25 mm, sessile, the base of the leaf blade ('petiole') clasping the stem. Upper surface of the leaf blade clothed in hairs so that it feels rough to the touch, lower surface glabrous.

Flowers

Inflorescence a slender panicle 10-20 cm long with slender filiform branches. Flower bracts cup-shaped around inflorescence stem. 2-3 flowers per branch, pedicels filiform. Bracts very small. Outer perianth segments 2-3 mm long, inner 2 mm long. Petals thinly textured. Filaments glabrous, fertile stamens 3, staminodes 3. Ovary 2-loculed with 1 ovule in each.

Fruit

Capsule very obtuse, longer than the perianth. Seeds oblong with radial ridges.

Features not available.

Distribution and Ecology

Occurs in the NT, CYP and NEQ. Altitudinal range 4-880 m. Occurs in monsoon forest, mixed forest, open Eucalypt and Melaleuca forest, vine thicket but also in Eucalypt woodland and dune vegetation.

Natural History & Notes

Plants are prone to be heavily grazed (Clarkson 5789).
