Cleidion javanicum Blume

Blume, C.L. von (1826) Bijdragen tot de Flora van Nederlandsch Indie 12: 613. Type: Lectotype (Kulju & Welzen, 2005): Blume s.n. 1336 (holo L, barcode L0270644), Java, in monte Bonkok Provinciae Tjanjor.

Seldom exceeding 30 cm dbh.

One or two flat glands normally visible on either side of the midrib on the upper surface at the base of the leaf blade; teeth rounded and often sparse. Domatia are shallow foveoles usually with hairs at the orifice. Leaf blades about 10-18 x 3-8 cm.

Male flowers: Flowers about 2 mm diam., +/- sessile in fascicles, spikes or racemes. Anthers open by horizontal slits close to the top of the anther. Female flowers: Flowers about 10-14 mm diam. on long pedicels, solitary and axillary.

Fruit about 20 mm diam., usually 2-lobed on a long stalk. Styles persistent. Cotyledons white or cream.

Cotyledons orbicular, about 30 mm diam., +/- sessile. At the tenth leaf stage: domatia are tufts of hairs; stipules narrowly triangular. Seed germination time 43 to 93 days.

Occurs in CYP, NEQ and CEQ. Altitudinal range from near sea level to about 600 m. Grows in well developed rain forest, usually gallery forest along creeks and rivers. Also occurs in Asia, Malesia, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.
