Stem

Shrub or tree to 12 metres.

Leaves

Simple, alternate; lamina elliptic to ovate, 40-100 mm by 15-45 mm, tough and thick; apex acuminate to an acute or blunt tip, or rounded; base cuneate; margins entire; surfaces glabrous, glossy dark green above, pale below; pinnately veined with 7-12 main lateral veins each side of midrib, distinct to faint above, faint to obscure below; oil dots distinct, large numerous; leaves faintly scented when crushed; petiole 9-14 mm, grooved above, margins incurved.

Flowers

Inflorescence terminal or in upper axils, panicles, 30-50 mm long; flowers bisexual, actinomorphic; sepals usually 5, ca. 1 mm long; petals usually 5, 2.5-3 mm long, white, spreading; stamens usually 5, shorter than petals; carpels 4-5, more or less free but fused basally; ovaries fused basally; ovaries superior, partly immersed in fleshy disc.

Fruit

Dry, (1)2-3(4, 5) basally fused, follicles 5-7 mm long; 1 black seed per follicle, forcibly discharged at dehiscence.

Seedlings

Distribution and Ecology

Occurs in CEQ and southwards as far as north-eastern New South Wales. Altitudinal range from sea level to 560 m. Grows in dry rain forest and vine thickets.
