Common name

Native Coleus

Stem

Usually flowers and fruits as a shrub about 1-2 m tall.

Leaves

Leaf blades about 4.5-10.5 x 2.5-7.5 cm, hairy on both the upper and lower surfaces, petioles about 2-4.5 cm long. Numerous glands on the underside of the leaf blade.

Flowers

Flowers on long slender pedicels about 2-4.5 mm long and arranged in clusters of about 12-15. Calyx about 1.6-2.3 mm long, pubescent and glandular on the outer surface. Corolla about 8-9 mm long, sparsely pubescent and glandular on the outer surface.

Fruit

Calyx persistent, about 4-5 mm long. Nutlets flattened(?) +/- orbicular (?), about 0.8-1 x 0.75-0.95 mm. Cotyledons less than 1 mm long.

Seedlings

Features not available.

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to Australia, occurs in CYP, NEQ, CEQ and southwards as far as south-eastern New South Wales. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 750 m (?). Usually grows in rocky areas in open forest but also found in monsoon forest and rain forest.

Synonyms

Plectranthus graveolens R.Br.Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae : 506 (1810). Lectotype: "Queensland, Port Clinton, 22nd Aug. 1802, R. Brown (BM, photo BRI; K)."
