Stem

Grows into a tree to 15 m, buttressed, blaze red.

Leaves

New leaves red. Leaves compound with one pair of leaflets. Leaflet blades about 7-17.5 x 2-6.2 cm, unequal sided, leaflet stalks 1-2.5 mm long, mostly enclosed by leaflet base. Stipules small and inconspicuous or absent. Lateral veins forming loops well inside the blade margin, 8-15 pairs.

Flowers

Inflorescence 1-7 flowered. Pedicels about 3-4 mm long. Sepals 4, about 3-4 mm long, apex sparsely and minutely ciliate, bright pink, becoming white. Petals 5, about 1-2 mm long, bright pink. Stamens 9-10. Ovary hairy. Ovules 1.

Fruit

Fruit on a 2-5 mm long pedicel, an asymmetrical, a reniform or oblong and laterally compressed nut, 28-55 x 19.5-31.5 x 13.5-23.5 mm, rugose, rust brown coloured, beak small near apex of dorsal side, seed solitary.

Seedlings

Seed germination time unknown. Cotyledons thick and fleshy, at or slightly above ground level. Cataphylls about 5 or 6 before the first true leaves. First pair of leaves compound with two leaflets. At the tenth leaf stage: compound leaves with two leaflets, each leaflet blade about 5.5-6.5 x 2-2.5 cm. Leaflet stalk absent or very short.

Distribution and Ecology

Endemic to NEQ, known only from a small area near Mossman. Altitudinal range from 20 to 120 m. Grows in wet lowland rain forest.
