Stem
Tufted perennial. Rhizome short, lacking stolons. Stems rigid, triquetrous and smooth, 30-80 cm tall.
Leaves
Leaves flat, 2-4 mm wide; lower sheaths pale and membranous.
Flowers
Inflorescence simple or compound, loose with 3-7 involucral bracts, lower as long as or overtopping the inflorescence. Primary rays 5-10, very slender, longer ones up to 20 cm. Spikes broadly ovoid with 10-25 spikelets. Spikelets filiform with 5-8 flowers, lower ones at right angles to the rachis. Rachilla broadly winged. Glumes not touching, with a green keel, 4-5 veins on either side of the keel.
