Stem
Large tufted perrennial sedge with triquetrous to trigonous culms which are clothed in glossy brown sheaths at the base.
Leaves
Leaves up to 7 mm wide with dense marginal prickles.
Flowers
Inflorescence with 5-12 primary branches up to 12 cm long. Spikelets ca. 10 in spicate to subdigitate, ca. loose, hemispherical to globose clusters of 1.2-3 cm diam.; spikelets 1-1.5 mm wide, 4-24 -flowered; rachilla narrowly winged; glume spacing 1.5-2 mm. Glumes straw coloured to red-brown, 2.1-2.7 mm long and 0.5-0.6 mm wide, slightly keeled.
