Cyperus sulcinux C.B.Clarke

Annual with fibrous yellowish roots. Stems tufted, triquetrous above, 5-30 cm long.

Leaves rigid, flat to caniculate, scabrid at the top, 1-2 mm wide; lower sheaths purplish, ligules well-developed.

Inflorescencesimple, loose; involucral bracts 3-4, lower ones overtopping the inflorescence. Rays 3-6, slender, up to 7 cm long. Spikes broadly ovoid with 5-10 spikelets, spikelets widely spreading with the lower ca. reflexed, lanceolate to linear, strongly compressed, 10-50 -flowered, rachilla narrowly winged. Glumes membranous, sharply keeled, obtuse, keel fuscous, 3-nerved, sides reddish brown with hyaline margins.

Nut 2-sided, laterally compressed with 2 longitudinal depressions, oblong, apex truncate, dark brown, 1.25-1.5 mm long, smooth and glossy; with remains of style.

Occurs in WA, CYP, NEQ and CEQ. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 80 m. Grows in closed forest, Eucalypt forest and Melaleuca forest. Also from India, Malesia to New Guinea.
