Family Description

A family of about 126 genera and 3995 species, widespread in temperate, cool and subtropical regions and at high altitudes in the tropics; seven genera occur naturally in Australia.

Genera

Acrothamnus - A genus of about 6 species in Borneo, New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia. Quinn et al (2005)

Acrotriche - A genus of about 15 species endemic to Australia. Jackes & Powell (1980); Paterson (1960).

Dracophyllum - A genus of about 48 species in Australia, New Caledonia and New Zealand; four species occur naturally in Australia. Bailey (1900).

Leucopogon - A genus of about 150-450 species in Malesia and Australia; about 140 species occur naturally in Australia. Pedley (1990); Powell et al. (1987); Stanley & Ross (1986).

Paphia - A genus of about 20 species in Papua New Guinea, Australia and the south west Pacific; one or perhaps two species occur naturally in Australia. Sleumer (1966-1967). Stevens, P.F. (2004).

Rhododendron - A genus of about 1000 species, mainly in the northern hemisphere particularly in the Himalayas but also in SE Asia, Malesia (particularly rich in New Guinea) and Australia; two species occur naturally in Australia. Craven (2002); Craven & Withers (1996); Sleumer (1966-1967).

Trochocarpa - A genus of about 14 species in Malesia and Australia; seven or eight species occur naturally in Australia. Sleumer (1964).
